What Is Coaching?

Coaching is defined in many ways by many experts.  Definitions include:

  • A process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve.
  • Unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance.
  • The art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another.
  • A short-term encounter aimed at performance improvement or the development of a particular competence.

Of the many definitions, the common threads include performance improvement, learning and personal development with the unlocking of personal potential.

Coaching is a new avenue for personal development.  Through the process of coaching, a partnership between a coach and an individual focuses on the skills and actions needed to successfully produce results.

Coaching:

  • involves “conversation” rather than advice giving, discipline or therapy
  • is result orientated and focuses on reaching goals
  • talks about weaknesses and obstacles but highlights strengths and positive changes
  • assumes that life is integrated – we can’t always expect that a person’s health, family life, relationships, work and spirituality and so on, can be put into neat little compartments
  • is a fairly short term activity
  • is aimed at specific issues/areas
  • is used to address a wide range of issues

Who can benefit from the coaching service of ESN?

That’s simple.  Any and everyone within education, whether you are a teacher’s aide, dietician, bus driver, teacher, administrator or support staff person.  It is all about an individual’s desire to improve their own performance on the job or developing their own personal potential.

What type of coaching can ESN provide?

ESN provides coaching in many areas.  Just remember, if you have a desire to improve your work or personal performance, the professionals of ESN are available.  Some areas to consider are as follows:

-  Starting an exercise program

-  Becoming a better listener

-  Learning to relax

-  Becoming more patient with my children or the children at school

-  Spending more time with my spouse

-  Establishing goals for skill development

-  Managing stress

Coaching can help you gain perspective and develop a plan of action to achieve your goals.

From time to time, personal issues begin to interfere with your ability to grow and develop.  Personal issues can include depression, anxiety, difficult relationships, addictions or financial difficulties.  Issues such as these and others require a different level of expertise and, if identified by the coach, will be referred to a more appropriate level of assistance.

What impact will coaching have on your life?

Individuals who engage in a coaching relationship can expect to experience fresh perspectives regarding personal challenges and opportunities, enhanced thinking and decision making skills, improved interpersonal effectiveness, and increased confidence in carrying out their chosen work or life roles.

Why is ESN offering a trial coaching service for those employed within education?

ESN recognizes the value in providing a range of personal and performance resources for those within education.  Working in education is both challenging and rewarding.  Almost all employees have a desire to grow and develop.  A coaching service can build a bridge from the personal and workplace challenges to the rewards that employment within education provides.

Resources that address the personal side of growth and development are few and far between.  ESN recognizes the resource void and are offering this trial coaching service to determine whether a need for such a service exists.  If you tell us that there is a need, the development of a comprehensive service will be explored and hopefully made available.

Please take time to let us know what you think.  The “Need an Answer” service gives a sampling of how a service could work.  It is only a sample and should be perceived only as a sample.  Please complete the survey on our a "Trial Offer" page and let us know what you think.
